David M. Shufelt
Mr. Shufelt founded Northeast Trading Company in 1979. His love of his work dates back to his childhood in the 1940's and '50's. As a child and young teenager, one of his most anticipated outings was a trip to New York City with his grandmother to visit the stamp shop at Gimbel's department store. It was around that time, too, that he and his older brother started their own small stamp mail order business.
Family circumstances eventually dictated that Mr. Shufelt work while attending high school which left him increasingly less time for his stamp collecting. By the time he married his wife of 52 years in 1960, he had retained but one stamp collection which he sold a little over a year later to pay for the birth of son David J. Shufelt. Ironically, it was his son's interest in stamp collecting in high school that rekindled Mr. Shufelt's own collecting interest. When his son matriculated at Williams College in 1979, the two of them took an ad in the local paper seeking postage stamps, coins and postal history. Within a year, the son's interests were drawn elsewhere at Williams, but the father was again, and forever more, smitten.
After more than 30 years in this business, Mr. Shufelt has developed expertise in far more than just stamp collecting. He is an alumnus of Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.
